Your Life Company has one, too. The difference is that you probably never drew it yourself—and that doesn’t mean it’s empty. It means that someone else is filling those roles without you having asked them to.

The role of “Human Resources”—the one that decides what behaviors are acceptable, what achievements are worthwhile, and which version of yourself deserves approval—is often still filled by your mom’s voice, a teacher from twenty years ago, or a comment someone once made that you’ve never let go of. The “Finance” department—the one that decides what’s worth your time and energy—is sometimes occupied by your partner, your boss, or guilt. And the “Marketing” department—the one that decides who you are to the outside world—is often handed over entirely to social media: we post what we think should be seen, not what we truly feel.

None of those “employees” were hired with any ill intent. They simply arrived first, and since the position was vacant, they filled it. The problem isn’t that they exist—it’s that they’re still there making decisions that no longer represent you, while you, the real CEO, show up only to sign off on what they’ve already decided.

Think about your last week. Who really decided what clothes you’d wear, what you’d eat, and what time you’d go to sleep? The honest answer might not be “me,” but rather “what we’ve always done at home,” “what my partner expects,” or “what looks good on social media.” That’s the organizational chart running on autopilot: positions filled years ago by people or customs you don’t even remember appointing to the role.

Reviewing your organizational chart isn’t about assigning blame or suddenly cutting anyone loose. It’s simply asking yourself, position by position: Am I the one making this decision, or is it still being made by someone I never appointed to the role? When you dodge the question with the most convenient excuse—”that’s just how I am,” “that’s how it’s always been”—the position remains vacant for you, even if it has your name on the door.

Creating this conscious organizational chart doesn’t mean firing anyone overnight. It means starting to make the decisions yourself that you currently make out of habit. It’s the same exercise in agency that we’ve already discussed in this column: it’s not about everything changing all at once, but rather about you being the one who makes the decisions, starting today.

With affection and the resolve of someone who is staking a claim to his own position,

Diana Co-founder and CEO of Mi Vida SAS

Drawing your own organizational chart—honestly, without relying on inherited roles—is exactly the exercise we propose in Zone-Based Management, available in our store.
